What to bring:
Dress is casual. The classroom is air-conditioned but field studies will be under hot, sunny conditions. Shorts and T-shirt are acceptable, a bathing suit will be needed for some field study. Sunglasses, hats and sunscreen will make outside sessions more enjoyable.Please bring writing materials, pens, pencils, and paper and a hand calculator. Still and video cameras are encouraged but not required.
Room and board:
Dorm rooms are available to course participants. Spouses and guests not taking the course may also stay in the dorm. Hotel lodging information is available through the St. Croix Hotel Association 1-800-524-2026 and many tourism related websites.Meals can be purchased from the university cafeteria. Breakfast and lunch: $3-5, dinner: $8. No smoking is allowed in the dorm rooms. No alcohol is allowed on campus. There is a mini-mart store within walking distance from the dorms. Transportation to restaurants off campus is not provided.
Travel to St. Croix:
St. Croix is served by American Airlines with one daily direct flight from Miami. American Eagle and other carriers provide connecting service through San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Local transportation:
On your arrival, taxi service is available from the airport to the UVI dorms ($10) or to your hotel (price varries). Taxi vans and public busses have pick-up points at the campus entrance for transportation around the island during the class. Cars can be rented from Avis, Hertz or other local agencies for personal travel around the island.
Closing banquet:
On Friday night, the class will travel to the Carambola Beach Resort for the Pirates Buffet Banquet Dinner.
Saturday sail:
On Saturday, the class will sail to Buck Island National Monument on the catamaran "Renegade" for a day of snorkeling.
Snorkeling equipment is provided by the boat. The day includes a Beach Bar-B-Q lunch.
Local attractions:
Whim Plantation, historic home and sugar plantation from the Danish colonial period.St. George Village Botanical Garden, tropical gardens of annuals, shrubs and trees of the VI.
Fort Christiansvaern, part of the Christiansted National Historic Site.
Cruzan Rum Factory, a local rum distillery tour with samples available.
Evening Activities:
Depending on the interest expressed by participants a number of after class activities will be arranged.Aquaculture videos will be available with TV and VCR.
Slide projector and screen will be available for participants to make a presentation about their aquaculture and aquaponic
projects.
