Biotechnology & Agroforestry Program

The Biotechnology & Agroforestry program in the Virgin Islands is devoted to the application of basic plant sciences for the evaluation, development and conservation tropical plant material. Papaya and Passion fruit are the tropical fruits being focused on for early production, insect and disease resistance, fruit quality and tolerance to the local soils and climate. Genetically enhanced papaya, sweet potato, and cassava are being grown under field conditions and evaluated for virus resistance, improved nutrition, and quality, respectively.  Native tree and shrub species are the focus of urban forestry for use in landscaping and agroforestry. Systems are also being developed to propagate endangered plant species of the USVI.
