 Current Projects

· Growth and production of minor tropical fruit trees in calcareous (high pH) soils

· Irrigation management for humid and sub-humid areas

· Fruit ripening and softening: the role of cell wall degrading enzymes

Accomplishments

· Established integrated production systems including the use of minimum tillage, windbreaks, elevated micro-irrigation systems, mulching intercropping and appropriate use of herbicides for the sustainable production of banana, plantain and papaya

· Introduced two new tetraploid bananas that are high yielding, vigorous, pest tolerant and highly adapted to the soils and climatic conditions of the USVI

· Developed a somaclonal dwarf French Plantain that is prolific and tolerant to local high pH soils and windy conditions. This cultivar has been exported to major banana producing areas for evaluation and inclusion in plantain breeding programs.
