Accomplishments

Over the past 20 years, the Vegetable Crops Program through its research and extension projects, has developed  technologies and contributed to the improvement of vegetable production in the Virgin Islands. Among the major accomplishments are:

 * Developed drip irrigation systems for efficient water use in vegetable production.

* Identified vegetable cultivars with superior performance in the USVI, particularly in tomato, cucumber, bell peppers, okra, bulb onions, eggplant, green beans, hot pepper, melons and leafy greens.

* Identified suitable cultivars of sweet potato and yam and developed improved crop management practices for increasing yield.

* Developed sustainable crop management systems for improving culinary herb production.

* Identified high yielding cultivars of tropical leaf vegetables and developed improved crop management practices.

* Developed techniques for improving soil fertility and water use through alley cropping, nutrient and water cycling.
